LaFee

   Posted by: Infinity

I was talking to a friend of mine and the subject of music came up.  We agreed that there seems to be a dearth of new music that would qualify as decent.  I’ve noticed this for awhile, and how the entire music industry seems to have changed.

My tastes are very divergent.  I do prefer heavy metal, but I listen to a wide range of material (to qualify this, heavy metal is very different than grunge metal or thrash metal.  I like to be able to hear the singers voice).  To that end, I have found some bands across the pond that I enjoy a lot.  To name a few, Hammerfall, EdGuy, and Helloween.  In my search, I came across a little known German band called LaFee.

Their lead singer, Christina Klein, is stunning.  They only have a couple of albums out so far, and both are in German.  I do not understand this language.  It is said that music can transcend any language barrier and I have found this to be true.  The band is somewhat of a pop band, yet throughout most of their songs a heavy guitar rift is present.

I have listened to their third album, Jetzt Erst Recht, a couple of times now.  It has gone gold in Austria and Germany, and I know why.  It is progressive rock, much like Dream Theater with a female vocalist.  I think this band has an excellent future ahead of them.

Rihanna & Chris Brown

   Posted by: Infinity

There are few things in the world that anger me.  I am very calm and my blood does not boil too easily.  Mostly, everything is Zen.  In so saying that, one of the things in the world that bothers me a lot is when I hear of a guy beating up a woman.

It’s been all through the news and the story of Rihanna and Chris Brown has been reported everywhere.  Essentially, Mr. Brown is alleged to have committed an act of domestic violence against “an unnamed female.”  He was arrested on suspicion of making criminal threats.  The Sheriff does not name the victim (as per policy) yet a photo has emerged of the female involved who looks a lot like Rihanna.  It does not take a genius to put two and two together.

This is one famous case.  There are many others.  There are far more that do not receive any noteriety at all.  There are even more that are unreported.  Only cowards beat women.  When they are caught they should be put in jail indefinately.  Men who beat women rank in the same area as animal abusers, rapists, and child-killers.  All cowards.

Now…on the flipside…why do abused women choose to stay with the men who beat them?  This is something that I do not comprehend.  If someone you are living with beats the holy hell out of you, then leave!  Get out, because the odds are they are going to do it again.  Its easy in theory to say but I’m sure much more difficult to do.  I am not sure what programs are out there to assist battered women.  That in of itself tells me that either there is not enough support, or that the message is not being promoted well enough.

Metallica

   Posted by: Infinity

For those who have not had the opportunity to see a Metallica concert live, I encourage you to do so.  Even if you are not a fan of the band (ok, if you like country music or rap, you’re going to be a little out of place).  The show that they put on is nothing short of spectacular.

I had the opportunity to see them recently, and not only did I leave with a lot less hearing than I had before, it was the most enjoyable evening out that I have had in a long time.  The concert was at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit.  A note about the Joe – it’s an old arena, built in 1977, but it has a feel to it that it was constructed much earlier.  I liked it…and I also liked that I didn’t get ripped off going to the concession stand.

Metallica also gives fans the opportunity to download the concert that they attended for free.  They record it directly from the sound board, and post it online within hours of the concert finishing.  I don’t know of too many bands that do this, but consider it a little extra value and allows you to remember the concert forever.  In addition, they even post the cover artwork!  How cool is that!

Opening for Metallica was a band I’ve never heard of, nor can I remember.  No big deal, their music was decent but the lead singer (if you can call him that) was pretty horrid.  I don’t think I understood a single thing that came out of his mouth.  They were followed by Machine Head.  A decent band, and really did their best to warm the crowd up for Metallica.  They did a cover of Iron Maiden’s Hallowed Be Thy Name, which went over pretty well.

Metallica took the stage just before 10:00 pm.  It certainly did not feel that late, considering we got to the arena at 7:00 pm!  The show started of with a laser light show similar to Pink Floyd.  This played throughout the first two songs, as well as The Ecstasy of Gold.  Pyro throughout the show erupted from the stage, and more light tricks with the floating “Death Magnetic” metallic caskets above the band.

The track listing was as follows:

That Was Just Your Life
The End of the Line
Creeping Death
For Whom The Bell Tolls
One
Broken, Beat & Scarred
Cyanide
Sad But True
Welcome Home (Sanitarium)
All Nightmare Long
Kirk Solo #1
The Day That Never Comes
Master Of Puppets
Damage, Inc.
Kirk Solo #2
Nothing Else Matters
Enter Sandman
Last Caress
Breadfan
Seek and Destroy

The last three songs were encores, and the band played for about 2 hours and 10 minutes.  Obviously, they played a lot of material off of their new CD (six tracks), but mixed in some classics and favorites.  I certainly did not expect to hear Last Caress!

My next road trip will be for UFC 97 in Montreal in April.  For that, I can’t wait either…but I will elaborate more upon that event in a later post.
